More hats than you can shake a stick at

...or a knitting needle, as it were.

Top row: Clara PomPom Hat, Camille Slouch Hat, Beret Style Slouch Hat Pumpkin Edition
Middle Row: LouLou Slouch Hat, Monique PomPom Hat, Camila Slouch Hat
Bottom Row: Beret Style Slouch Hat, Gigi Slouch Hat, Emma Slouch Hat

A sampling of my winter collection of hats, lovingly hand-knit in the nicest French fiber I could get my hands on. All are seamless, impeccably finished and [if I say so myself] expertly knit. My friend Christophe saw these in person earlier this week and asked - rather incredulously - if I had really knit these using only knitting needles and my wee hands. Mais, oui! (Then he ordered the Camila Slouch Hat for his girlfriend and asked for a man version of the Clara PomPom Hat for himself.)

Clearly, I want you to keep your head nice and toasty and stylish when the cold of winter arrives. As winter is almost here, all of these hats are currently available at tortillagirl.etsy.com!

Hula!

Grass Skirt. Hula!
Remember the flashy grass print cotton and skirt sketch I talked about here? Well the skirt has finally been pulled off the sewing machine and after a few adjustments I've got it just like I had intended in my sketch. So all you sassy lasses who like outdoor picnics and nature can wear your own grass skirt this summer 'cause it's already up in the shop. Available in French sizes 34-42 (measurements in the listing), and if you'd like it below the knee I can add on up to 12 cm. Hula!

Hula!
Special offer for my blog readers: 10% off this skirt until June 11. Mention "I read tortillagirl.com" in the message to seller and you will be refunded after purchase. Please don't forget the code - the discount will not be applied unless the code is written in the message to seller. Thanks!

Little Black Number

Let's see, now, what do we have here?

1) Designer fabric that you're not going to find splashed all over the internet and much less on a fellow colleague at the office. Know how I know? Because it's exclusive and I got it from a small family-owned French textiles company for whom I did design work. Yeessssssssss!

2) Lightweight. Simple. Chic. 'Nuff said.

3) It's in BLACK. Come on. Black goes with everything. Black will always be the new black. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I only made two of these in this fabric with this particular print. One quickly found a home. There's one more left, and it can be found in my etsy shop. If you'd like it, don't wait too long to get it.

Fancy Lady Clutches :-)

Are you a real smart lady with a multi-faceted personality? Then you totally want this haute clutch, with its melange of high-end Italian appliqued fabric, pinstriped wool suit fabric, rock and roll black fashion denim, and elegant hand-embroidered (by me) matte sequins and seed pearls. Like I said, this clutch is for a real smart lady who loves a fancy clutch in a melange of fabulous textures. Because I say so.

And speaking of clutch bags, my Fancy Swirl Clutch was featured the Etsy front page recently:

Debut of a new bag design:

A hip bag in swirly print cotton, fashion denim in black and French cotton serge for the lining. Adjustable strap, fab metal rings, decorative interior pocket and white contrast topstitching at the seams make this an oh-so-cool thing to carry your schtuff around :-)

More handbags! Yay!

When I saw this fabulous pinstriped denim fabric I snatched it up and told the lady who was selling it to me, "I love this!" And she said (in French, translated into English), "Me, too. It reminds me of grandpa's trousers." As soon as she said that, I knew that I wanted to build a bag that would look like it had been repurposed from grandpa's clothes! Panels in different denim, as if grandpa's trousers and jeans had been cut up and repieced...the lining made from what looks like the pinstriped cotton of one of his shirts...and to snazz it up with some girly touches, some contrast red cotton serge and a feminine mother-of-pearl button accent in red. And here you have it.

And for those who like geishas, I've restocked my Etsy shop with another Geisha and Kanji knitter bag; the first two were big hits so I decided to add another one (slightly different from the first two, so that each is unique).

Something for the stylish knitter :-)

I recently designed a bag for the stylish knitter (or a regular bag for the stylish non-knitter :-), and made two of them for sale in my etsy shop. Before I could post about them here they sold, so I made another one using some fabulous and bold designer print inspired by Kitagawa Utamaro's 18th century artwork:

I've always had a "thing" about Japanese culture. And the color red. Both of which you'll find in this bag, along with some functional pockets for your circular needles. Woo hoo!

I've made this bag available in my etsy shop. Click here to purchase this bag.

Chateaux Lovers...oh la la!

Nearly every year my husband, son and I travel to the Loire Valley for vacation, and one of the things I love is visiting all the chateaux there, the gardens, exhibitions, historical re-enactments...sigh. Yes! I'm a romantic at heart. Don't tell anyone ;-)

(Photos I've taken during our trips to the Loire Valley.)

When I saw this French designer print cotton with its chateau garden scenes I had to take it and make it into a bag! The print is large so I decided to cut it into a very cool and stylish messenger bag with a large flap. I mixed the fabric, which is a heavyweight cotton, with a rustic pre-washed denim to give it a hip and modern edge. Look:

Pretty Butterflies for Everyone!

My Pretty Butterfly Bags have found some wonderful buyers (I truly heart my buyers!), so I've made some more available in both my etsy shop and my online boutique. These are limited editions, and in order to make each one unique I ensure that no two bags made in this print are exactly alike.
