Inspiration: Rugged Denim

Regardless of the setting there is something so utterly American about denim. It's iconic. It's also very inspiring to me. When I was in fashion school the projects at which I excelled (bragging rights: and which were later exhibited at the school's open house as examples of creative student work) usually contained denim samples. It is, without a doubt, one of my favorite textiles.

These particular tear-outs are inspiring to me because they evoke a sense of adventure, boldness and self-confidence. The model's hair styling and makeup add a touch of glamour. Love it.

Inspiration: Ethnic Romanticism

I like the layering, choker, beehive, turban-like effect created by the scarves, lace, ruffles, transparency, and (while I'm not a big fan of bows around waists because they remind me of gift wrapping) the ribbon detail. Plus, I'm a HUGE fan of models who proudly show the gaps in their front teeth, or as they're known over here: "dents du bonheur" (teeth of happiness). We need models who show their gaps more often.

This was my favorite installation at the 2010 International Garden Festival at Chaumont. I'm tucking this photo into my workbook because I'm inspired by the dreamy feeling of floating on a small lake, complete with lily pads. Romantic. Sigh.

Fairy houses.

Originally posted on my photo blog, here is a very small peek of the 2010 International Garden Festival held on the grounds of the castle at Chaumont-sur-Loire. A big source of creative design inspiration for me, I took a load of photos which I'll be gradually posting at my photo blog over the following week. Any images that get tucked into my real life workbook for inspiration or sketching purposes will get posted here as well. Hope you enjoy!

Originally posted at my photo blog at, this is a photo that I took of a weeping willow in front of the castle at Blois. I am inspired by its graceful beauty and how walking under it made me feel calm and protected.

If I were a tree, I'd like to be a weeping willow.

Like a Heart.

Blois, nestled in the Loire Valley, is one of my favorite places to spend my summer vacation. The history, architecture and art never fail to inspire me and everywhere I look I find something that I want to document with my camera. After my stays there I always return home with all creative batteries recharged and my inspiration workbook full of ideas. Indeed, one of the times that I visited was such a creative catalyst for me that I made the decision to apply to fashion school to study a degree program in both design and tailoring, and started that school year.

I took this photo while walking down a street near the apartment where we stay in Blois. For more, visit my photo blog at

While walking in the Parc de la Tete d'Or the other [drizzling] day, I took a few photos for design inspiration. The quiet, the calm, the dreamy haze caused by the sprinkling rain, the lush green and colorful spots of flowers...these are the types of scenes that inspire me as I sketch out many of my designs. You'll see some designs inspired by these images here in the future, I'm sure.

I heart Chanel: Chic

The epitome of Parisian flair, the perfect mix of casual elegance, an inimitable talent for accessorizing...this is another facet of Coco Chanel that I will always find inspiring.

I heart Chanel: Playful

Spontaneous, sporty, gamine...this is the side of Chanel herself - not necessarily her designs - that I find hugely inspiring. No matter what she wore her own brand of chic was effortless. She knew that she didn't possess the standard of beauty that was in fashion during her time, so she perfected a personal style that was boyish and adorable - like a girl who borrowed her boyfriend's clothes and wore them well.
